In a riveting lecture on spacetime physics, Westminster Astronomical Society Inc., will delve into the intricacies of special and general relativity, captivating you with both theory and practical examples. The lecture begins with an introduction to special relativity, explaining how it revolutionized our understanding of space and time by showing that both are interwoven into a single continuum. Transitioning to general relativity, the lecture will highlight how Einstein’s theory describes gravity not as a force, but as a curvature of spacetime caused by mass. Our speaker will discuss real-world applications, such as the precise calculations needed for GPS satellites, which must account for both special and general relativistic effects to provide accurate positioning.
Rain or shine, during the indoor portion of the program, you will learn the constellations and have your questions answered about the galaxy. If the weather is clear, the group will spend time outside once it is dark viewing the cosmos through "time machines" (telescopes) provided by WASI. Feel free to bring your own telescope! WASI will assist with setup and focusing as needed. Wear sturdy shoes as night hiking is required to get to the viewing field. This program is eligible for the Model B Junior Ranger Program. Signup is encouraged. This program will be held even if raining.
