June 1, 2025 is a memorable day for Soldiers Delight Conservation, Inc. and also for the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area that we so valiantly strive to protect and conserve! Chromite, first discovered in Maryland and mined at the Choate chromium mine at Soldiers Delight NEA in the 1800s, becomes the official Maryland state mineral effective TODAY!!

Look What We Found!
Our SDCI webmaster recently discovered this gem of a program featuring our founder, Jean Worthley, as she walks through the Soldiers Delight habitat filming an episode in the summer of 1978 for Maryland Public Television's Outdoors Maryland series. The video has been graciously provided for our use by Maryland Public Television and the University of Maryland's Maryland Public Television records, 0087-MMC, Special Collections and University Archives. Soldiers Delight Featured During Maryland Science Week
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources honored Maryland Science Week this year by visiting ten areas of significant scientific importance to the natural world. Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area in Owings Mills was on the list for September 26, 2024.
Victory For Soldiers Delight NEA on Zoning Issue
It is with immense satisfaction and gratitude that Soldiers Delight Conservation, Inc. announces that SDCI was victorious this week in convincing Baltimore County District 4 Councilman Julian Jones to vote no to up-zoning a 4.5-acre parcel adjacent to SDNEA from Rural Conservation to Business Major. It was a hard-fought battle and there are several to thank.

Soldiers Delight Conservation, Inc., the Friends Group for Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, is strongly opposed to a zoning change request by Rockdale Towing Company to expand its commercial/industrial footprint onto land adjacent to the northern side of our sensitive habitat.
